Where We Came From

Our company started as a small brick-and-mortar retail store. Tim McTighe, President, opened The Cedar Store in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pa in 1992. Selling his unique line of western red cedar outdoor furniture, Tim helped Western Pennsylvania create comfortable outdoor spaces with high quality porch swings, picnic tables and patio chairs.

In 1999, Tim launched CedarStore.com. Starting an online retailer in the time of dial-up was no easy task. But as his reach grew, so did his customers. And as his customers grew, so did their interests.

To answer their calls for more products and options, we launched TeakDesigns.com to showcase high quality teak furnishings. Later, GazeboCreations.com specialized in gazebos, pergolas, cabanas, garden sheds, pool houses and pavilions that could be custom designed for both homeowners and commercial sites. Launching the Design Wizard in 2008, customers were able to design their gazebos in an easy step-by-step process. The Design Wizard earned us a top spot in Internet Retailer’s top 100 most user-friendly websites. Eager to spread our user-friendly approach to outdoor living, we launched AllPicnicTables.com to help people create beautiful outdoor dining areas. Finally, DesignerBridges.com answered the demand for beautiful, high quality garden bridges and foot bridges to make landscapes, gardens and municipal parks more accessible.

Shifting our focus to our online stores, operating five websites simultaneously took on a marketplace mentality. We were five dynamic retailers working under one roof and one philosophy. We set out to create a united identity that would encompass all of our specialty shops, as well as our unique viewpoint on home and outdoor decorating.

So, in March of 2011, we launched Fifthroom.com to hold all of our online specialty shops. Fifthroom.com allows our family of websites to work together like a high quality market district. Each specialty shop provides focused guidance in its area of expertise, but they all operate under one roof with one easy check out. We’re a diverse market, but we have a united philosophy.
