Maintenance & Care

To keep your structure in the best shape possible it is important to know how to properly care for it. Luckily, the maintenance for these high-quality materials is simple and easy so you can spend less time on up-keep and more time enjoying the outdoors.

Red Cedar
Red cedar, double roof gazebo

Stain/Sealer:
To preserve the fresh, healthy appearance of our North American Western Red Cedar, and to further protect it from the elements, we recommend using a water-repellent sealer or stain. We offer various stain/sealer options which we will apply before shipping the structure. To maintain this enhanced appearance and protection, we recommend reapplication of stain/sealer once every 1-2 years for maximum effectiveness.

Unstained:
If you prefer a more rustic look for your structure, you can forego stain application and allow the wood to age naturally. The color of the lumber will naturally fade to a gray patina over time. This change does not effect the structural integrity of the lumber, but unstained wood can become more susceptible to moisture damage and pests as it ages.

Note: Natural checking in wood occurs over time and adds unique, rustic character and actually increases the strength of wooden structures and furniture.

If you wish to maintain the natural color of the cedar, you may apply the sealer as soon as your gazebo is assembled. For a more rustic look, you can wait until it has weathered to a desirable degree, then use a water-repellent clear sealer that is recommended for use on cedar. Applications should be made every 2 - 4 years. Since these treatments are available under several brand names, you should ask a local lumber dealer to recommend the right one for your gazebo.

Treated Pine

Stain / Sealer:
The best way to retain the youthful qualities of our Pressure-Treated Southern Yellow Pine is to apply a water-repellent sealer or stain. This treatment provides additional resistance from decay and insect damage over time. We offer a variety of stain options in various colors that we can apply before shipping. For continued protection and color-retention, we recommend reapplying stain/sealer every 1-2 years.

If you want to paint your Pressure-Treated Pine Gazebo, two coats of acrylic latex exterior paint should yield optimum results. Be sure to read the label on whichever brand you choose, as manufacturers’ recommendations may vary, and remember that cold or damp weather and humidity may also affect drying times. You can also use a solid color stain. We advise you not to paint the floor of your gazebo, as this may make it dangerously slippery.

If you choose to paint your Pressure-Treated Pine Gazebo, the recommended application would be two coats of acrylic latex exterior paint. Be sure to read the label on whichever brand you choose, as manufacturers’ recommendations may vary. Keep in mind that cold or damp weather and humidity may affect drying times. We advise you not to paint the floor of your gazebo, as this may make it dangerously slippery.

You can clean your Pressure Treated Pine Gazebo with the same products that you use on your porch or deck. A power washer is fine if the correct tip is used. Please be cautious with any pressure washing.

Follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning painted pressure-treated pine.

*Checking - Checking can be minimized, but not always eliminated on wood products that are outside and exposed to moisture and temperature changes. As the surface of the wood dries, small hairline checks will develop. These are more visible if you paint or stain the product with a solid color, especially light colors. You may have to re-stain or paint after the first full 4 season cycle. After the first year, checking will not be as noticeable.

Vinyl

Low-Maintenance:
Our vinyl is practically maintenance-free. Simply wash the vinyl surfaces with soap and water or a mild cleanser. Washing once every 2-4 years is usually sufficient, depending on the conditions of your location. Rinse carefully with a garden hose as needed.

Although vinyl can also be cleaned with a pressure washer on low settings, this is not recommended because accidentally using high settings may warp the vinyl. Please exercise caution when cleaning vinyl with a pressure washer.

Do not clean vinyl with a power washer.

Screens & Screen Frames
Gazebo screens and screen frames

Apply the care instructions for Cedar and Pressure-Treated Pine Gazebos to screen frames of the same types of wood.

Aluminum screen frames may be cleaned with soap and water.

To clean the screens themselves, remove them from the gazebo, then use a mild detergent, a soft-bristle brush, and a garden hose with low water pressure. When repainting, staining, or sealing your gazebo, it is best to remove the screens. Over spray or paint/stain droplets are hard to remove from screening if allowed to dry.
